Pop Up Picnic

The last week has been an absolute whirlwind, full of birthday celebrations and now I’ve finally found my way back to my computer I’ve realised just how many posts have backed up since my absence. Today’s post is a quick look back on a great little evening I had with my flatmates at the end of April. When we heard that Picnic were going to be doing a month residency at the Hideaway Bar just up the road from our flat, we knew we couldn’t miss out.

We headed up for the final Sunday Supper of the month ready for a celebration of Britain’s finest flavours and produce. With Picnic offering 1 main and 2 sides for only £10 this was going to be quite the feast! We ordered a few cocktails and then sat down to eye up our potential choices.

Luckily I had spoken to Nick, the creator of Picnic, earlier in the week and he had saved me the final chorizo scotch egg! I coupled this with the coleslaw and for my main I chose the pork burger with cider apple sauce. My flatmates all went for similar combinations apart from choosing lamb and beef burgers instead of the pork.

When it arrived it looked delicious and we couldn’t wait to tuck in. I felt slightly guilty that I’d managed to grab the last scotch egg so I decided to share it with the rest of the table. It went down extremely well, crispy on the outside, runny yolk and oozing flavour from the chorizo.

The pork burger was succulent and served in a delicious brioche bun. The apple sauce added that old familiar flavour that works so well with pork, creating a really moist and juicy mouthful. The coleslaw brought a welcomed texture to the dish and the apple and celery kept it nice and refreshing.

We were completely stuffed after such a hearty meal, so reluctantly we gave the puddings a miss and headed off for one final cocktail before home. Picnic’s pop up event had been a real success for Nick and he is already in the process of creating stage 2 of his Picnic venture. He’s promised to keep me posted on his next instalment, so watch this space for more of his fine British cuisine!

Enjoy!
