Search TimeOut for London’s top cocktail bars and a certain Happiness Forgets will appear inside the top ten and for good reason too. It was this fact alone, that had us excited and intrigued to sample the new East London sister bar, Original Sin, not to mention that it was situated beneath our favourite burger haunt, Stokey Bears. That’s right, classy cocktails and flavour-brimming burgers all in one spot, can’t go wrong surely?
Tom (Burger Bear) has created a weekend-must in the establishment that is Stokey Bears. We constantly find excuses to return and get ourselves covered in sweet bacon and burger juice. This time however, the burgers were merely an entrée into an evening of much enjoyed sinning!
Once we’d cleaned ourselves up a bit, we headed below ground to drink in our first glimpse of Original Sin.
We were greeted by the sight of a long, thin bar stretching the length of the room with lots of bare bricks and intimate little booths for parties of four. The party piece is a chandelier-lit pool table, free for all revellers to enjoy! The bar was buzzing with intrigue and excitement for this new offering. We took a booth and were lucky enough to bump into our friends from London On The Inside and man about town, Sebastian, quickly turning things into a party!
We ordered a number of cocktails throughout the eve, to try and get a feel for the full menu and were not surprised to find that everything was a hit. The pedigree from Happiness Forgets shone through as the cocktails were creative in ingredients, strong but well balanced in flavour. A nice touch is that the serving staff are all extremely knowledgable and help make heads or tails of the more obscure sounding drinks so you know exactly what you’re getting yourself into as the list isn’t your average mix of mojitos and vodka tonics.
Favourites from the night consisted of the 6 Ball – Kamm & Sons, Laphroaig, Lemon, Ginger Ale; Perfect Storm – A Happiness Forgets classic that’s made the journey further East, created using Dark Rum, Plum Brandy, Lemon, Honey & Ginger; and the Diamond Manhattan – Vulson White Rye, Lull, Suze, Dry Vermouth & Grapefruit Twist. Simple in their form but original in their combinations and thankfully not too experimental that things get lost in obscurity like other cocktail bars we’ve sampled before.
Whether it’s a mid-week catch-up with friends or a night of full blown celebrations, it seems that Sinning is Winning! It’s a great neighbourhood bar that doesn’t take itself too serious but is definitely more refined than your average thanks to the quality of the cocktails, however the free pool and hip hop playlist keeps things on a casual level, especially with the friendly table service too. And of course, you’d be stupid to pass up on the pre-booze burger from the Burger Bear above!
