Nestled on a back street in the heart of Mayfair you will find El Pirata, a large and friendly tapas restaurant which is currently finishing celebrations for their 20th anniversary! An impressive achievement and it was clear to see that the restaurant is popular for both business and pleasure.
The moment you walk in you are welcomed by the friendly staff who clearly have a passion for the restaurant, in particular Paulo, our lovely waiter for the evening, who has been working at El Pirata since he was a small child, when the restaurant first opened. It’s a surprisingly big restaurant although we would recommend asking for a table upstairs as the downstairs area lacks the same charm.
The menu is very reasonably priced considering the quality of food and they offer set menus at both lunchtime and evenings. The wine list is extensive but informative, with a map of Spain to show you the origin of the grapes for each bottle, a charming touch indeed.
After perusing the menu, it was time to dig in and sample a few dishes. First up was the Iberian Ham, beautifully presented, this delicious meat originated from a rare semi-wild acorn fed black foot pig. The flavours were superb and clearly the care and attention applied to the rearing of this animal helped create a stunning taste from beginning to end.
On Paulo’s recommendation we tried the Piquillo Peppers stuffed with Sea Food, which were cooked to perfection and the Prawns with Olive Oil, Garlic and Dried Hot Chilli Peppers was a simple dish that paired perfectly for dipping the large basket of bread into.
For the all important meat option we opted for the succulent Grilled Lamb Cutlets and the Chicken & Chorizo Skewers, both following suit of the dishes sampled before and you can’t go wrong with a little portion of potatas bravas to accompany them.
All in all, it was an extremely pleasant evening at a spot that works for both the ‘suits’ of Mayfair, winding down and entertaining clients and also the tourists and weekend shoppers, who fancy great affordable tapas in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
