W Bali Hotel And Spa Review

If you’ve been following our Instagram over the last couple of weeks you’ll have seen that our travels have taken us a fair few miles away from the buzzing city streets of London.

This year we have set our sights on finding gourmet offerings abroad with a little slice of luxury on the side for good measure. With that in mind, we found ourselves on a flight to Bali for a special two-week press trip, courtesy of some of the island’s hottest resorts.

Our first stop on the itinerary took us to Seminyak, the main spot that everyone seems to find themselves in when they first touch down on the tarmac. Some familiar friends of ours, the W HOTEL GROUP, kindly offered to host us for a couple of days and were greeted off the plane with a wonderful welcome party, much to the delight of four journalists who’d been traveling for the best part of 30 hours.

After a forty-minute drive from Denpasar airport and some serious weaving through a maze of back lanes and congested crowds of mopeds, we departed from the main street and down a corridor of trees, only to emerge into the impressive driveway of W Bali.

The first thing you will notice here and this will follow for the entirety of your travels around Indonesia, was the overwhelming level of hospitality. From start to finish, our stay was inundated with greetings of goodwill, opening of doors, welcome drinks and cold towels, even free smoothies around the pool to refresh the sun kissed sunbathers. No stone was left unturned, everything was provided.

We were lucky enough to stay in an ocean view room at W and if you have the budget, we’d strongly suggest you do the same. Morning or night, the views out over the signature W pool and across the ocean, will remind you that yes, you are in paradise, even if you do need to pinch yourself a couple of times to believe it. The view isn’t everything though, romantic tubs for two and waterfall style showers were more than enough to get us excited and this was only our room!

Having freshened up, we made our way to W’s Starfish Bloo Restaurant and set about sampling the Chef Menu, created by Head Chef, Matthew McCool. We had been told that Matthew had previously worked in a number of Michelin-starred kitchens for the likes of Gordon Ramsey and Tom Aikens, so as you can imagine, our expectations were high.

We indulged in five dishes over the course of the evening, each delivered with it’s own specially paired wine. Chef McCool’s pedigree shone through in every dish, with the pinnacle of the feast being a Grilled Cod Fillet with Thai Green Curry, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil & Corn Textures, all washed down with a beautiful glass of 2011 Chardonnay.

The menu was hard to fault from start to finish, with each dish delivering a bold new combination and flavour for the palate to savour. After we were finished with the savoury, we ended the evening with a dish named ‘Textures Of Chocolate’. This was another finely decorated dish, consisting of Nutella Crumble with Sour Cherry. Presentation alone told you that it was going to be good, as the attention to detail in the design gave us the nod that the flavour pairings would have received the same level of attention, if not more and right we were! A perfect dish to conclude an evening of fine cuisine and a menu that we think will rival the best in the region if not, the island.

There really is no reason to leave W Bali, as everything you could ever want is provided for you for the perfect paradise stay at the foot of the Indonesian Ocean. Mornings are spent at Fire, the hotel’s second restaurant, where you can gorge on all sorts of flavoursome treats, be it healthy or indulgent. We opted for Pancakes or Eggs Benedict, most days, as they were simply too good to overlook. If you’re feeling guilty after though, you can always burn the calories off in the state of the art gym or maybe a spa treatment is more to your taste? We know where our allegiance lies, that’s for sure!

If you are looking to venture out of the resort at night, there’s plenty to accommodate your needs. Some of our favourites were Ku De Ta, Potato Head and The Rock. All are perfect for delicious drinks and you can’t beat them for front row seats as the sun melts into the sea. We’re talking proper Instagram moment’s people!

If you are heading to Bali and looking for a little slice of indulgence, you can’t go wrong with W Bali. The world-famous hotel chain has built up quite the reputation over the years and their Bali offering is another gem in their already outstanding portfolio.

If you do make the trip, be sure to show us your best shots. You know where to find us by now, @WeTheFoodSnobs for both Twitter and Instagram and we love to see what our followers get up to!
